Foam rubber

What is foam rubber?

Foam rubber, also known as craft foam, is a flexible, soft material made from foamed rubber or synthetic EVA foam (ethylene vinyl acetate). It is characterized by its fine cell structure, elasticity, lightness, and water repellency. Foam rubber is available in many colors, thicknesses (usually 1–10 mm), and formats—typically as sheets, sheets, or pre-cut shapes.

The material is non-toxic, odorless, and particularly valued in the arts and crafts sector because it is easy to cut, glue, paint, and decorate. Foam rubber is especially popular in schools, preschools, and for creative DIY projects. It is also used in professional settings—such as model making or stage design.

What can foam rubber be used for?

Foam rubber applications at a glance:

  • Crafts and DIY projects: Foam rubber is ideal for greeting cards, scrapbooking, table decorations, window displays, door signs, masks, figures, or costumes.

  • Children’s games and educational materials: Letters, numbers, and shapes made from foam rubber promote learning and are safe for children.

  • Making stamps: Foam rubber works well as a material for homemade stamps.

  • Model-making and stage design: For textures, surface patterns, or flexible, lightweight elements.

  • Protective and cushioning material: As a non-slip pad under furniture, appliances, or decorative items.

  • Decorative applications: For decorating cans, boxes, picture frames, or other surfaces.

Thanks to its water resistance, foam rubber is also suitable for damp areas such as bathroom decor or garden projects (though it’s best to protect it from direct weather exposure in these cases).

What tools do you need to work with foam rubber?

Foam rubber is particularly user-friendly—you don’t need any expensive specialty tools:

  • Cutting and shaping:

    • Sharp craft scissors for simple shapes.

    • A utility knife or precision knife (e.g., scalpel) for fine details.

    • Motif punches or hole punches for decorative cutouts.

  • Gluing:

    • Craft glue (solvent-free), hot glue (for adults), double-sided tape, or spray adhesive.

    • Special foam rubber adhesives provide a strong hold, even on larger surfaces.

  • Painting and Decorating:

    • Acrylic paints, waterproof markers, felt-tip pens.

    • Glitter, rhinestones, stickers, fabric appliqués, or other craft supplies.

  • Heat-shaping and embossing:

    • Foam rubber can be heated and shaped using a hair dryer or an iron (on a low setting, with parchment paper), e.g., for 3D masks or reliefs.

For particularly elaborate projects, embossing tools, hot stamping devices, or craft machines can also be used.
